If you were overweight in your teenage years, you should realize the psychological trauma this can cause. Being overweight at this age not only has life long effects on the body but can also be harmful to self esteem well into adulthood. If your son or daughter has a weight problem, don't you think it's time to take steps to help them with the problem? More and more teenagers have problems with their weight. Recent studies have shown that some of the reasons are body structure, DNA, bad diets with too much fast food and too many calories, but the overriding cause is lack of physical activity. Most teenagers get less than 30 minutes of physical activity every day.
As a parent, if you don't do regular exercise you might be contributing to your child's bad habits and their weight problem. Try to find an exercise that you can do together. There are lots of fun ways to do exercise, you just need to start doing one that you enjoy. Doing exercise together can also be beneficial for your relationship with your children.
Firstly, as with any exercise program, it's a good idea to check with your physician, especially if both of you are overweight. There could be some underlying health problem that is the cause of your weight gain. You will also find out how fit you are and what kind of exercise it is safe for you to do. If there is no medical reason for being overweight, teens can lose weight remarkably quickly. An easy way to start is to walk regularly. If you do this with your child or children, it's a nice chance for you to talk, but you could also get things rolling by encouraging them to walk to the store or school rather than driving or being driven (if it is safe to do this).
Encouraging your child to be interested in sports and taking part, not just watching, is a excellent way to introduce physical activity without it being hard work. Cycling is also a great activity that you can do with your child. The important thing is getting your child to enjoy this lifestyle change and want to do it as if it was a new hobby. If you are a mother or father it is up to you to look after your offspring and ensure their health and happiness for the rest of their life. Most people tend to pick up our lifestyle habits while we are young, so by getting them to start new habits now you will contribute to their future. Once they begin to notice the changes in their physique that more physical activity combined with a healthier diet can make, they will want to carry on with their new lifestyle.
