Can You Really Lose Weight by Eating Less?

A discussion on the amount of calories that one should consume is one of the most interesting when you are in a group of about 3 or, 4 people, all interested in losing weight. One other interesting question that comes out of this discussion is, if a 900-1000 calories intake can help speed up weight loss plans?
High calorie consumption is the primary reason for being overweight. At the same time eating less and exercising more will surely help in weight loss. There is no rocket science behind this. If the calories that you burn in more than the calories intake, you are sure to lose weight. This is the fact that leads to one of the weight loss myths that cutting down even more calories can help reduce even more weight. This is indeed a myth.
Going too severe on a calorie cutting plan can prove to be extremely harmful and a very bad idea. It is hence, not recommended that you do a severe cut in your calorie intake.
If you have been into a weight loss plan for some time at least, you will have noticed low calorie diets have been there since a long long time but have not been a reliable method to permanent weight reduction.
There are a lot of people who recommend less than 800 calories of intake. But this is a very dangerous idea. Most of the weight loss experts will never recommend cutting down your calorie intake to less than 1000 calorie a day.
The reason - Cutting down your caloric intake to less than 1000 calories sends the body into a "starvation mode" because of eating less than is required. In other words, it means that the body will start to think that there is scarcity of food and consequently to maintain weight, the metabolism rate of your body will slow down.
Then your body will start storing the additional calories due to the slow metabolism rate into fat cells which is even more dangerous.
Whenever you start on your low calorific value diets, your body will get into the habit of identifying it as a period of starvation and will get into the conservation mode. One important thing to keep in mind is the fact that it is your metabolism that helps reduce fat by burning the excessive fat into energy. You can now figure out what will happen if your metabolic rate is low.
Diets that are extremely low on calorific value also leads to a lot of other problems. The side-effects of such a diet include headaches, weakness and reduction in concentration levels.
The final effect of all this is that you will get into a habit of binge eating because of the hunger that you will experience and binge eating will lead to a dramatic increase in weight gaining even more weight that you had lost during the hard work that you did to lose weight.
When in the future you plan to lose some more weight, your body cells will start to act funny because they are now used to the starvation mode and you will not see results like you would have in the first attempt to lose weight.
Hence staying away from low calorie diet is extremely important in weight loss. The only way to not fall into this trap of calorie deficiency is to find out how many calories your body will actually require to maintain itself everyday. You can find this out using one of the many tools that are available on the internet or, by consulting your dietitian.

  1. Hi, nice to find my favorite topic here. The lurking variable here is that you felt bad when wrapping up uni and feel good now you're done. Tssk tssk, university graduate! However, I have started this diet myself, just to see how it will work out.
