These days if you don't eat properly you are putting yourself at risk when it comes to cancer, heart attacks and obesity. As the old saying goes prevention is better than the cure. Here we look at 10 foods that could prevent, and save your life in the process.
Lemon
Lemon zest contains a substance which could guard against skin tumours called D-limonene. Just one tablespoon per week could cut your risk by up to 30%.
Dark Chocolate
Dark chocolate contains polyphenols and flavonoids. These can help to maintain cholosterol at a healthy level and can lower your risk of heart disease. Just don't make this an excuse to stuff your face!
Mushrooms
Some varieties of mushroom can boost your immune system, enabling you to battle those viruses more effectively. We suggest button mushrooms, as their antioxidants can also help to battle cancer.
Parmesan
Believe it or not Parmesan cheese can help you battle the bulge. By adding Parmesan to your meals, you are adding more protein. Protein makes you feel fuller faster and will also help burn calories at other periods in the day.
Avocado
Avocado is high in monounsaturated fats, which are good for the heart. Research has also shown that they may help prevent mouth cancer. Avocados contain phytochemicals, which are plant chemicals that have protective or disease preventative properties.
Chili Peppers
Chili Peppers contain capsaicin which can alter the activity of a muscle protein in the body called SERCA. This can help to speed up the bodys metabolism, helping you shed the pounds. Capsaicin also helps the liver clear insulin from the bloodstream, making you less likely to store fat.
Parsley
Parsley is high in Vitamins C and A and also contains iron. A handful can contribute to your RDA and it can be added to almost any dish.
Tofu
Researchers have suggested that eating tofu regularly can almost halve a woman's chances of developing ovarian cancer. There's good news for men too though. It is thought that regular consumption of tofu by males can guard against prostate cancer. Anyone for tofu?
Oregano
Just one tablespoon of oregano can have more antioxidants than an apple. Oregano can be added to most dishes, and Mexican oregano is reported to have the highest antioxidant count.
Tomatoes
Tomatoes are full of lycopenes, the cancer fighting phytochemicals. So go for organic ketchup to get your daily dose.
