Start The New Year on a Healthy Note

The New Year is quickly approaching and the advertisements on creating resolutions are bombarding us as well. Instead of getting stressed over your health and the need to lose weight, let's take it slow. Remember that it may have taken quite some time to be in the state you are in and it is completely unrealistic to think you can lose the unwanted weight in a matter of days or even months. This post is meant to motivate you and encourage you to start the new year on a healthy note.

First, let's evaluate your eating habits. Are you eating at least 5 to 6 small meals a day? It may sound like a crazy amount but your body actually needs constant nutrition throughout the day. If you think of your body as a machine and food as fuel it is easier to understand the need for small meals throughout the day. The body needs a healthy breakfast to begin the day.

It doesn't have to be a large breakfast but one that consists of foods that will energy your brain and body. A mere cup of coffee is not substantial. If you must have your coffee, combine it with a bagel and peanut butter or fruit with cheese, or a white omelet or hard-boiled eggs and toast. Notice that the food suggested does not have to be fancy and elaborate but something that will give you energy to sustain you until the following small meal. The snacks in between your major meals can include pretzels, crackers, yogurt, cheese, fresh fruit, smoothies and so much more. Keep in mind that they must not be fried, or sugar laden since you are using these snacks for energy. When you implement these snacks your body will be happy and not feel starved when the major meal time arrives.

When you eat 5 to 6 small meals a day, not only will your body stay energized but your metabolism levels will increase which will prep your body for weight loss. Of course, the mere addition of several snacks throughout the day will not take the place of exercise. We all know that you must keep the body active to keep it healthy. Instead of taking the elevator or escalator opt for the stairs. Instead of looking for the closest parking space, park your vehicle a bit farther and walk. Get your family involved and implement a walking routine. With the introduction of video games, there are many games on the market today that include activities that the entire family can enjoy while staying healthy.

Let's not forget the importance of water into your diet as well. Your body needs the water for hydration and it also helps to keep the body satiated. Instead of reaching for the sugar laden drinks, consider adding some fresh fruit to your water for a hint of flavor. Smoothies are a great way to get the added nutrients your body requires as well and a favorite among children.

It is important to keep in mind that the above tips are fairly general and each of us may need more than another. No one knows your body better than you. If you have food allergies you must take those into consideration and most importantly do not neglect your health. Let's not wait until January 1st to implement healthy habits, instead keep these habits going all year round. Your body, mind and soul will thank you for it.
