Vitamin D As A Natural Remedy

More than 300 million people are suffering from pulmonary disorders such as asthma, which is why it is very important to look for effective treatments as well as preventive measures. The good news is that scientific research has revealed a natural remedy that may stop the development of such conditions, and that remedy is none other than Vitamin D. This Vitamin is already known for its ability to improve bone structure and prevent the development of some cancers. It would seem that boosting lung health should now be added to it many benefits.
Some experts are now promoting Vitamin D as a natural remedy for asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Scientists who conducted the research which revealed the asthma-fighting ability of the vitamin explained that the form of Vitamin D called calcitriol effectively reduces the growth of what is known as "airway smooth muscle," which is a common problem in people with asthma and COPD. In fact, the effect of calcitriol was found to be much more significant than that of corticosteroid, which is a common asthma treatment.
Vitamin D Deficiency
Vitamin D is often referred to as "the sunshine vitamin" because it is naturally produced by our body when we are exposed to sunlight. The link of Vitamin D to lung health is perhaps made evident by the fact that chronic fatigue and breathlessness is one of the most common indications of Vitamin D deficiency. Aside from compromising lung health, Vitamin D deficiency also causes depression, osteoporosis, diabetes, heart disease, and drastic weight loss.
Sources of Vitamin D
The sun is, of course, the best source of Vitamin D and regular exposure to sunlight is the best way to get enough of the vitamin. Too much sun, however, can leave you open to the risk of skin cancer, so you should be careful not to stay under the sun for too long or at least wear sunscreen if your plan to expose yourself to sunlight for more than 15 minutes. If you live in an area that does not get much sunlight, or if you simply want to increase your intake of the vitamin, you may do so by eating any of these foods: eggs, salmon, tuna, and yogurt. You would also do well to start drinking milk and orange juice on a regular basis.
Dosage
You may also opt to take Vitamin D supplements. If so, take note that the ideal dosage varies according to age. If you are under the age of 50, then you should take 5 micrograms per day. If you are aged 51-70, 10 micrograms is the ideal daily dosage. Those who are over 70 years of age should take 15 micrograms of Vitamin D supplements daily.
With the concept of Vitamin D as a natural remedy for COPD and asthma becoming more and more popular, don't you think it's high time for you to start increasing your intake of this miracle vitamin? Your health can't wait, so why should you? Start getting your ideal dose of Vitamin D now!
