Mushroom: The Magic Food

Mushrooms have a very positive effect on our health. Mushrooms are rich in disease-fighting phytochemicals. If you eat mushrooms regularly, they lower the risk of breast cancer. Mushrooms also prevent prostate cancer cells from multiplying. They supply hard-to-get nutrients. One medium-size mushroom supplies 21 percent of the recommended daily intake of selenium, and one-third of your copper needs. It also has as much potassium as a medium-size banana. Oyster mushrooms are a good source of iron.
Mushrooms retain their nutrients when stir-fried, grilled or microwaved, and can help cut kilojoules. When minced meat was replaced with mushrooms in dishes such as lasagna and chilli con carne, adults consumed 1600 fewer kilojoules per day.
Mushrooms reduce cardiovascular disease by lowering blood pressure and cholesterol. They also reduce insulin resistance which increases insulin sensitivity and block the growth of cancer tumors. They boost the immune system and lower toxic levels of estrogen hormone. They are anti-inflammatory and have strong antioxidant properties. They are low in sodium, calories and fat. They reduce the hormone-dependent breast cancer. They have analgesic, anti-inflammatory properties. They help fight infection, increase libido and combat allergies.
Mushrooms are an excellent source of potassium, a mineral that helps lower elevated blood pressure and reduces the risk of stroke. One medium portabella mushroom has even more potassium than a banana or a glass of orange juice. One serving of mushrooms also provides about 20 to 40 percent of the daily value of copper, a mineral that has cardio-protective properties. Mushrooms are a rich source of riboflavin, niacin, and selenium. Selenium is an antioxidant that works with vitamin E to protect cells from the damaging effects of free radicals. Mushrooms contain about 80 to 90 percent water, and are very low in calories (only 100 cal/oz). They have very little sodium and fat, and 8 to 10 percent of the dry weight is fiber. Hence, they are an ideal food for persons following a weight management program.
Button mushrooms have a type of carbohydrate that helps steady blood sugar levels while keeping metabolism high. Consuming 3 ounces of button mushrooms each day will help you burn more calories and shed as much as 13 pounds in five weeks, according to a study. A natural compound in shiitakes, known as lentinan, revs up white blood cells to help fight off infections. The active ingredient, gandodermic acid, found in reishis helps control cholesterol levels by 12%, can help shrink the plaque causing clogged arteries by 2/3, and can reduce blood pressure by 12%. Eating just a few ounces per day will relax the arteries and keep them clear.
Mushrooms naturally have vitamin D. They are the only non-animal food to have natural vitamin D, generated automatically when they are exposed to light. They contain beta-glucans which can provide protection against some types of cancer - including breast, skin, stomach and lung cancer. Beta-glucans in mushrooms have been shown to be capable of passing immune cells to the cancerous area and destroying cancer cells.

The Many Health Benefits of Eating Nuts

Nuts are one of the most nutritionally dense foods on the planet. When eaten regularly, nuts have proven to dramatically improve a person's health. They are high in protein, high in fiber and high in the good fats you need to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The best part about nuts, is that there is no preparation involved. They are ready to be eaten at any moment!
There are many health benefits related to eating nuts. Nuts have been linked to numerous studies that suggest that eating them on a regular basis can drastically reduce the chances of developing cancer or diseases. In 1992, the Adventist Health Study conducted at Loma Linda University concluded that people who ate nuts regularly were much less likely to have a heart attack in their lifetime. Part of this reason is because of the healthy omega-3 fatty acids found in nuts. The consumption of healthy fats is shown to help lower LDL cholesterol and lower cholesterol is, of course, related to better heart health.
Nuts are also a great food to add to anyone's diet who is looking for weight loss help. This is also because nuts are high in healthy fats and also because of their high fiber content. Both fiber and the healthy fats found in nuts help you feel fuller longer. This allows you to cut calories and, therefore, drop weight. Studies have proven that people who eat nuts regularly are, in fact, thinner than those who don't. So, if you are looking to improve your personal health and lose some weight, it would be a good idea to add nuts to your diet.
Nuts have plenty of other good nutrition factors to consider as well. They are high in phytonutrients and antioxidants, such as vitamin E and selenium. These antioxidants help eliminate the free radicals that take place in the aging process and, therefore, help you age at a slower pace.
It is recommended that eating 1-2 oz. of nuts a day will give you the maximum amount of health benefits. Nuts are great when eaten as a snack and can be assorted into bags to take on the go. Try to avoid nuts that are highly salted and do not go overboard on eating nuts, because eating too much can have reverse effects on your health goals.
There are many reasons why you should start eating nuts on a regular basis. They are tasty, nutritious and require no preparation. It is crazy that more people these days don't eat nuts regularly. For those who don't, they are surely missing out on an excellent opportunity to become healthier individuals.

How To Eat Fish To Benefit Your Health!

My patients and I are lucky. We live in an area surrounded by the ocean and several big lakes. Not only is it a beautiful environment but it is home to one of the best foods you can eat, fish, which is abundant here. There are many great fish restaurants in this area that are always packed with customers who love it. In fact, fish is one of the best foods you can eat for good health. It is full of protein, potassium, and heart and joint healthy Omega-3 fats.
However, because my patients like to eat fish so much, it's important to make them aware that not all fish are equal - in their health benefits that is. While they can be full of good nutrition, some have the ability to absorb too much mercury and pass it along when consumed.
Let me share with you my advice to patients about what kind, and how much, fish you can safely eat to be sure you are getting the most health benefit from it.
Choosing The Most Beneficial Fish
Fish is naturally one of Nature's perfect foods. It's lean, full of protein, and an excellent source of omega-3 oils that reduce inflammation in your body and protect against cardiovascular disease and arthritis. Fish also keeps your skin and joints lubricated and reduces cholesterol. One fish oil, in particular, DHA, helps babies neuro-pathways and cognition to develop correctly.
Fish like wild Alaskan salmon, tiny krill, and yellowfin tuna, have high levels of these beneficial Omega-3 oils. In addition, they are good sources of potassium, a mineral many people do not get enough of! Potassium aids energy and muscle function as well as prevents metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes.
With all of these good nutritional, health preserving things that fish has going for it, just like my patients, you may be tempted to eat a lot of it, thinking if a little is good, more must be phenomenal! Well, with fish, not so much.
In fact, when I talk to my patients about eating fish, I like to emphasize two important concepts - moderation and avoidance. Now, those two terms may seem contradictory, but in eating fish there are many that you can eat in moderation and other fish that you should avoid altogether. Why? Because of their mercury content.
All fish contain a certain amount of mercury which you process as a toxin that eventually clears from your body. Light to moderate consumption of certain types of fish should pose no problem for you. As I counsel my patients, your risk of Hg (mercury) toxicity increases with the types and amounts of fish you consume.
Here's a list I pass along to my patients from what the US EPA and the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) recommend to decrease your mercury exposure from eating fish:
• Avoid shark, King mackerel, swordfish, tilefish, grouper, Marlin, orange roughy, lake bass, walleye - these have the highest levels of Hg.
• Limit white albacore tuna to 18 oz a month - it contains more Hg than light tuna.
• Limit saltwater bass, croaker, halibut, bluefin tuna, sea trout, Maine lobster to 18 oz a month. These have moderate levels of Hg.
• Limit Carp, Mahi-Mahi, crab, snapper, perch, cod, monkfish to 24 oz a month. These have lower levels of Hg.
• Shrimp, sardines, canned light tuna, wild Alaskan salmon, pollock, whitefish, and catfish, black cod - these have the lowest levels of Hg. You can enjoy up to 12 ounces a week.
Get The Most Benefit From Your Fish
If you stay within the guidelines recommended above for what types and how much fish to consume, you'll be getting a lot of benefit out of your fish-eating experiences. However, there are several other things you can do to optimize the benefits of eating fish and to help neutralize some of the drawbacks of eating it:
• Add some fermented foods to your diet - things like yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, help remove toxins, like mercury, from your body through creating good gut bacteria.
• Adequate amounts of antioxidants like Vitamin C, E, and resveratrol - help prevent damaging oxidation effects of mercury.
• Add some natural chelators to your diet - things like garlic, selenium, cilantro, and chlorella. These substances bind to toxins like mercury and move them out of your body.
• Adequate fiber intake - sweeps the colon clean and lessens levels of mercury accumulation.
• Supplement - you can get the good benefits of eating fish with none of the bad by taking Omega-3 fish oil supplements, like those that come from fish such as krill, which are abundant in these oils.
Eating a variety of fish is a delightful experience, which delivers a lot of health benefits. We need to follow the guidelines listed above, though, to avoid mercury toxicity, which can cause a multitude of health problems, including depression, kidney disease, fertility problems and Alzheimer's. With a little common sense, however, we can still enjoy eating the seafood we love so much without concern of toxicity!

Diet Improvement And Weight Loss Advice

If you're attempting to lose weight, you're going to need the right diet and exercise plan. You cannot just throw something together or loosely keep track of what you're doing. You also do not want to join up with any fad diets either. Continue reading for a more comprehensive approach, and use this diet improvement and weight loss advice to help get you going.
When exercising and eating right, you should definitely make sure that you don't have a protein deficiency. Eat healthy sources of proteins, such as beans, fish, lean meats and more. Many good vegetables have plenty of protein in them as well, and you have to make sure you get all the nutrients and vitamins that your body needs.
In order to promote healthy digestion, you should definitely make sure that you have plenty of fiber in your diet. Eating fiber helps push everything through without certain things blocking you or getting you backed up. You don't want to experience indigestion, acid reflux, heartburn and other conditions when you're trying to exercise and lose weight.
Really pay attention to the beverages you're drinking. Many people think about their food intake and their exercise plans, but they don't realize how important it is to pay close attention to all beverages. You drink consistently throughout your day, and these beverages need to be healthy. Plus, you need to be giving your body plenty of water in order for it to stay hydrated. Drink all-natural fruit juices as well.
Cut down on your portion sizes whenever you're eating. Many people think more about eating a smaller breakfast or skipping it altogether, but eating large portions for their lunches and dinners. However, this should be exactly the opposite. Eating a larger, more healthy breakfast is essential to get your whole body started right for the day. Then, you should watch your portion sizes throughout the day, still eating a large dinner, but not too large.
While you don't need to join a no or low-carb fad diet, you do need to pay attention to carbohydrates just like you need to pay attention to your fat grams, sodium and calories. Why? Look on all the aisles of the grocery store, and see how many food items you see advertised that are full of unhealthy, processed sugars and fats. Cut out the junk food, and eat healthy carbohydrates and healthy fats.
One way you can really help yourself eat much healthier is by staying away from those fast-food restaurants. While you don't want to keep yourself from enjoying food, you need to find healthier alternatives and make lifestyle changes that are going to work for you. There are definitely ways to enjoy food and make this happen without eating fast-food cheeseburgers every day.
It is important that you remember the advice that you've read as you prepare a good weight loss plan for success. It is not easy losing weight, but it is very rewarding. You can get the results you're looking for if you keep persevering.

Interval Training and Weight Loss

Interval training has become a very popular way of training among fitness fans, especially those trying to burn fat faster and become fitter and stronger. Various studies have proven that this type of physical activity positively influences overall fitness level, stimulates weight loss and improves endurance. If you haven't trained this way yet, it might be worth experimenting!
Can I Use Interval Training To Burn Fat And Lose Weight?
Definitely, yes! The research of the American College of Sports Medicine has shown that short high-intensity workouts burn more calories. Interval training improves strength and endurance, it increases tolerance to the lactic acid build-up and, in many cases, it is beneficial for the cardiovascular system, it helps with stress relief and mood improvement. The afterburn effect of this training is much greater than after a long but low-intensity workout. It means that you keep burning calories after you finish the activity, which is crucial for weight management. Besides, normally interval workouts are short, and you can always find time to perform them!
Interval training is one of those training types I can think of when I speak about the best fat burning exercises. I often include intervals into my training, because this type of exercise can be performed everywhere - outdoors, indoors, in front of the TV, in the gym or at any other place. The main idea of this training is to alternate short bursts of high intensity training periods with short periods of having rest or training at a low intensity level.
The are various ways of interval workouts, for example, advanced HIIT (high intensity interval training), interval workouts at a lower pace, like, for example, running at different speeds (one minute fast, two minutes slower, one minute fast and so on). We can build the whole training from intervals, or we can include, say, sprints into the jogging process, for instance, to perform them in the middle or at the end of the activity.
Your training could look the following way:
Warm-up (slow jogging) - 3 minutes
Sprint (run as fast as you can) - 10 seconds
Jogging/walking - 40 seconds
Sprint - 20 seconds
Jogging/walking - 40 seconds
Sprint - 30 seconds
Jogging/walking - 30 seconds
Sprint - 20 seconds
Jogging/walking - 40 seconds
Sprint - 10 seconds
If you are not a beginner, you can repeat the cycle for several times
Cool-down - jogging/walking - 5 minutes
If you train with a heart rate monitor, you will see that your heart rate during the short bursts of activity is around 80-90 percent of maximum (most of the gym cardio machines have the installed heart rate monitors).
Heart Rate
The use of a heart rate monitor during the interval training can help you control the process of the training and keep track of the progress. As I have previously mentioned, many cardiovascular machines already have the heart rate monitors, but if you like training outdoors, you can buy a heart rate monitor at any sports store, it is not expensive.
Your RHR (resting heart rate) is a rate at which your heart beats while you are at rest, not having recently exercised. In order to calculate RHR, you need to measure your pulse for 15 seconds and multiply it by 4. For example, if you heart beats 17 times per 15 seconds, it means that it beats 68 times per minute. This is your RHR.
Your HR max (maximum heart rate) can be measured in various ways, the most popular and the easiest of which is the following: 220 minus your age. For example, if you are 30 years old, your maximum heart rate would be 190 beats per minute (220 minus 30). This formula, of course, is not 100% precise, but it can give you a good idea of what your HR max is.
Your THR (target heart rate) is the desired Fat Burning Heart Rate heart rate for a specific type of physical activity. In order to calculate your THR, you need to know your HR max. Your THR depends on your goal and on the way you train.
More About THR
It is considered that aerobic workouts involve training between 55-65 percent of HR max (low zone) and 75-80 percent of HRmax (high zone). Anaerobic workouts, like sprints, involve training around 80-95 percent of HRmax. The recovery periods between anaerobic bursts of activity drop to a low aerobic zone or lower. As you can see, an experienced athlete can have his heart rate close to maximum possible (95%) during the anaerobic intervals.
Keep in Mind
Make sure you properly assess your capabilities and, if necessary, consult your doctor before you start any intense training program. It is important to remember that if you are a beginner, the recovery periods should be longer, the training-recovery ratio should be 1:3. If you start feeling any pain in the heart or stomach zone, you should immediately stop and continue walking.
Warming-up and cooling-down are essential parts of any interval training. These workouts are great for fat loss, but at the same time they are very intense, and HIIT can be challenging for your heart, that is why, if you are not and experienced athlete, it is a good idea to see your doctor before starting any training program.
Stay motivated!

Excellent Dieting Tips For Weight Loss

Losing weight does not have to involve fad, crash diets. In fact, these particular diets can be very dangerous. Instead, you just need to make some small changes in your diet that you can maintain for the long haul. Read the below article to learn how you can follow a diet that will put you on the right track for weight-loss success.
First, change your eating schedule. Rather than consuming three larger meals, consume five or six smaller meals. This means you need to eat about every three to four hours. This will help keep your blood sugar levels steady. When your blood sugar levels get too high or too low, your metabolism will slow down, and weight gain will occur. Having steady blood sugar will help ensure your metabolism is running efficiently at all times. In addition, consuming frequent smaller meals will help prevent you from overeating during any particular meal.
Be sure you keep track of all the calories you consume every day in a journal. This means you will have to count the calories of everything that goes into your meals. Although this sounds like it is a hindrance, studies show that people who write down their daily caloric intake into a journal are twice as likely to lose weight and keep it off than those who don't. Therefore, it is an important tool in your weight-loss plan. Once you get used to counting calories, it will get easier. In fact, it will eventually become natural and you won't think twice about doing it.
Whenever you go to work, bring your lunch with you rather than going out. When you go out, you are much more likely to make unhealthy choices. Nowadays, virtually every location has a McDonald's, Burger King, Hardees, Sonic, Wendy's, etc. However, you need to avoid them because finding healthy food items is almost impossible to do. Although there are healthier alternatives, such as Subway, packing your own lunch is really the best way to ensure you don't sabotage your diet.
Don't forget to pack some snacks with you when going to work or elsewhere for at least several hours. This does not mean packing Reese's peanut butter cups, Hershey chocolate bars, etc. Instead, pack fruit, healthy whole-grain bars, and nuts. This will help keep your hunger at bay without packing on excess calories.
If you really enjoy certain types of unhealthy food, you do not have to completely eliminate them. In fact, you can still enjoy them sometimes. The key is to use moderation. For instance, if you love chocolate, it is actually okay to include a little chocolate every day. Aim to consume dark chocolate because this type of chocolate actually provides your body with antioxidants to keep you healthy. If you enjoy ice cream, it's okay to have a little bit every now and then. Just don't consume the entire carton in a matter of a couple of days. Moderation is key.
As this article demonstrates, it is possible to make small diet changes and produce large weight-loss numbers. Understand that you should not make radical changes, and crash diets never work out. Instead, you just need to change your mindset. Once this is done, weight loss is certain to occur.

Most of these diets focus on the cover of the book, your body, and disregard the pages, you're thinking, emotions, and lifestyle.
If you want a smaller waist for years to come, you need a mentor or advisor who will guide you on an expedition to uncover the control and willpower that you have. You then need to learn how to manipulate those powers to get what you want in life, including a smaller waist. You may have been told either subconsciously or directly that if you have no power over your eating habits, you have no power period. This is far from the truth. We are all exceptional human beings, filled with strength, physically, socially, and emotionally, just waiting to be let loose. When you cure all emotional wounds, and realize and build on the strength within you, you have made great strides in setting yourself up for permanent weight loss.
If you find weight loss and dieting to be a bummer, the odds are you won't succeed in achieving your goals. However, if you have a plan to follow that enriches you and is also enjoyable, you have the means to succeed. Actually, by implementing a weight loss plan that you enjoy, you can lose a size in two weeks. How's that for a smaller waist.

The Top 5 Fat Burning Foods For Faster Weightloss

A good diet & exercise is always going to be the most powerful way to lose weight but certain foods encourage the body to burn fat faster. If you want to lose weight it would be worthwhile for you to know what they are. We've listed the top 5 for you.
#1 Eggs (and more specifically egg yolks):
All the egg nutrients except for the protein are in the yolk and an egg is one of the most complete foods you can eat. If you have eggs for breakfast you will feel less hungry for the rest of the day.  Eggs also contain vitamin B12, which is key to helping your body break down and burn fat. Try and pick free range eggs from pasture fed chickens as they are a good source of omega-3 fats.
#2 Oatmeal:
Oatmeal is rich in soluble fibre. This assists in flushing bad digestive acids out of your system and thus lowers cholesterol.
#3 Low fat milk and natural yogurt:
Studies have shown that women who eat low fat dairy products 3 to 4 times a day lose 70% more fat than those that consume a low amount of dairy. The fat breakdown in cells is likely to be caused by the calcium, protein and the amino acid leucine that is found in these foods.
Lets pause here quickly and note that our top 3 fat burning foods can be eaten right at the start of the day for breakfast!  An excellent way to start your day with the goal of maximizing fat loss. On to number 4...
#4 Avocados:
Avocados are often thought of as a "fatty food" - maybe so but they contain all healthy fats! Avocado is super-high in mono-unsaturated fat, but also power-packed full of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.  Guacamole (mashed avocados with garlic, onion, tomato, pepper) is one of the best toppings created full of fat burning potential. Add it to any meal throughout the day.
#5 Walnuts
All nuts are good but walnuts are one of the few plant sources of omega-3 fats crucial to health.  One reason for nuts being good fat burners is that not all of the energy in them can be broken down but they are filling thus helping you to eat less.
Good ways to integrate these foods into your diet to increase fat loss:
  • Try and add these foods and their variations to each of your meals.  Fortunately you have plenty of scope.  For example eggs can be eaten in a number of different ways and for all meals: Hard-boiled, soft-boiled, omelette, poached etc.
  • These foods can also make up excellent  snacks for example the avocadoes and walnuts.
  • Look for related foods e.g. Tomoatoes, Almonds, Cashew Nuts that you can also include.
